Welcome to Aco Šopov’s Lyrical House. Aco Šopov [read : Atso Shopov], one of the founders of contemporary Macedonian poetry, is among South Eastern Europe’s most eminent poets of the 20th century.
This site has been built as a virtual and dynamic museum which offers a panorama in words and images of Aco Šopov’s life and work (see the plan of the House) The idea for the site was born thanks to the poetical friendship between Roland Kayser and Jasmina Šopova, respectively director of Editions PHI, Luxembourg (in charge of the site’s design) and the poet’s translator and daughter (in charge of the site’s content) who met in 2012 when the collection of Aco Šopov’s poems Soleil noir – Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) was published.
The records shown on this website come for the most part from the personal archives of Svetlana Šopova, the poet’s widow, Vladimir Šopov (1948-2000) the poet’s son, and “Aco Šopov Archive” at the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU). We thank the Academy, of which Aco Šopov was one of the founding members in 1957, for having kindly let us digitize and publish the manuscripts.
We also thank Macedonian Radio Television for digitizing a great number of programs devoted to Aco Šopov for this site, excerpts of which are available in the Video Library of his Lyrical House.
And we thank the National and University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski” – Skopje, that provided a large number of books no longer in print, which are now in the Library of Aco Šopov’s Lyrical House.
Thanks also to the Macedonian Ministry of Culture that allowed a large number of pages of this site to be translated into English and into Russian.
Aco Šopov’s Lyrical House opened its doors at the Saints Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje on October 8th 2014.
