“As a poet, Aco Šopov seems designated to represent Macedonian poetry in the world literature, not only because his poetry is rooted in Macedonia, but also because it reflects trends in European literature”, writes Fridrun Rinner. In her study “The symbolic forms in Aco Šopov’s poetry”, some important analogies between Šopov’s work and lyric symbolist poetry are emphasised: the poems’ concentration, the absolute metaphor, the liberation of the word (entering the realms of the unutterable), the preoccupation with the ‘bottomless’ (‘that which is not’), the identification of the poem with a mistress, the belief in synesis as being more important than sound. It is noteworthy that even in a recently standardised language, as Macedonian is, the poet is already faced with the problems of poetic dissatisfaction with language.
