To the Seagull Circling Over My Head
O my seagull,
do not alight upon my eyes.
These separated shores offer you no landing.
Plunge into all the depths,
soar above all the heights,
and bring me daylight—I will take it!
O my seagull, my eyes are vacant.
Do not alight upon my heart!
This heart, my seagull, is not mine:
Cross all the lands that have never been crossed,
past all the living, the unknown, the lost.
Look down at the lonely, at all who are divided,
at all the icy peaks and all the green meadows,
and listen—
as long as your wings beat wearily above them,
so will my heart beat restlessly within them.
Do not alight, my seagull,
but to your flock return.
I am a boat that is fated
to collide with the unknown.
