Despair Before the Fortress

Fortress, invisible warriors protect you.
I came and, just a few feet from you, fell.
Fire and wind, wind and fire.
From here there is no going back.

Your terrible silence chills my flesh.
Like a wolf, despair alone is prowling
the ashen rocks of this dread silence.
From here there is no going back.

In my heart, the earth is crumbling to pieces.
It presses, weighs on me; it piles up and dares me:
Be as my equal. You, too, become earthen.
With wind and fire the earth pursues me.

Indifferent, deaf to lost lives and lament,
incapable of pity or condemnation,
night after night the fortress is wakened
by the sunlight of those who are dead.
