A Day Made In Poetry! Tribute to Šopov at UNESCO
The Centenary of Aco Šopov's birth was celebrated in association with UNESCO, in the Headquarters of the International Organization, on 21st of March 2023.
In 2021, the General Conference of UNESCO, at its 41st session, decided to be associated with the celebration of the Hundredth anniversary of the birth of Aco Šopov, following the proposal of North Macedonia, with the support of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Tunisia.
Following this decision, a vibrant tribute was paid to Aco Šopov at UNESCO on March 23, 2023, World Poetry Day, with the participation of Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, and Stevo Pendarovski, President of North Macedonia.
The tribute to Aco Šopov at UNESCO was also part of the national programme “2023, Year of homage to Aco Šopov,“ under the patronage of Mr Stevo Pendarovski.
The program of the Day was divided into four sections: Official inauguration with the participation of the Director-General of UNESCO and the Macedonian Head of State; International symposium in honor of Aco Šopov, on the theme "Poetry: Creativity, Translation and Circulation of Works in Languages of Lesser Diffusion"; A multilingual and multimedia poetry performance 'The Long Coming of the Fire' inspired by Šopov's poetry; and an exhibition, “The Road I Walk”, on the creative journey of Aco Šopov.
More that 20 participants attended the event, coming from: Argentina, Canada, Croatia, France, Italy, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Mexico, Poland, Senegal, Spain and Tunisia.
