Édouard J. Maunick, Maurice
Joseph Marc Davy Maunick, known as Édouard J. Maunick, was born on September 23, 1931 in Flacq, Mauritius. Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Demain l’Afrique (1977-78), Director of the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works (1983-1991), Ambassador of Mauritius to the new government in South Africa (1994-1999), he is the author of some twenty books of poetry which have earned him the Apollinaire Prize in 1977, the Grand Prix de la Francophonie awarded by the Académie Française in 2003 and the prize of the International Council of Francophone Studies in 2013.
Among his poetry collections, you can read: Les Oiseaux du sang (1954; “The Birds of Blood”), Les Manèges de la mer (1964; “Taming the Sea”), and Mascaret ou le livre de la mer et de la mort (1966; “Mascaret or The Book of the Sea and of Death”), Fusillez-moi (1970; “Shoot Me”), Ensoleillé vif (1977), En mémoire de mémorable suivi de Jusqu’en terre Yoruba (1979; “A Memory of the Memorable, Followed by As Far as the Land of the Yoruba”), Soweto : le cap de désespérance (1985), Mandela mort et vif (1987) Anthologie personnelle (1988), Toi laminaire (1990), De sable et de cendre (1996), Seul le poème (2000), Elle et île de la même passion (2001), 50 quatrains pour narguer la mort suivi de Contre silence (2006).
He has translated into French an important selection of poems by Aco Šopov, published in 1994 under the title Personal Anthology, by Actes Sud, in the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works. Read his text on Aco Šopov: A Poetry Projected into the Universal.
