Meeting them, we had many conversations, some of which are reflected in this interview. Knut Skujenieks, <em>Literatu\u0304ra un ma\u0304ksla<\/em>, 24.8.1978.\r\n\t<\/h2>\r\n\t<p><em>Knut Skujenieks: Why did you come to Latvia so discreetly and without making your presence felt?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Svetlana \u0160opova: The main reason for our trip was to rest and recover Aco&#8217;s health. So we wanted to visit your country without formalities, while remaining incognito.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>K.S. And how did you manage it? <\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Aco \u0160opov: We had a good rest, even though the weather was cool; perhaps it was even better that we didn&#8217;t have the heat we were used to. It turned out that from the waitress to the museum manager, not to mention my Latvian colleagues, everyone already knew my poems in Latvian translation! It was as if I had come to visit acquaintances and friends.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>K.S. Your Latvian-translated poetry collection<\/em>Uguns-milesti\u0304ba<em>\u00a0(The Fire&#8217;s Love) contains poems written up to 1970. What happened thereafter in terms of poetry?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>A.\u0160. I published the book <em>\u041f\u0435\u0441\u043d\u0430 \u043d\u0430 \u0446\u0440\u043d\u0430\u0442\u0430 \u0436\u0435\u043d\u0430<\/em>, which is mainly African-inspired. The collection was written during my mission as Yugoslav ambassador to Senegal.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>K.S. And you probably have something else on your mind at the moment.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>S.\u0160. The book you just mentioned contains poems about Africa in which we feel nostalgia for Yugoslavia, and in the poems Aco is currently writing, the process is reversed. But this new book isn&#8217;t quite finished yet.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>K.S. Africa Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia Africa&#8230; The poet&#8217;s place is, as your folk song says, &#8220;on the terrace, neither in heaven nor on earth&#8221;. Could one say that?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>S.\u0160. \u0438 A.\u0160.Absolutely!<\/p>\r\n<p><em>K.S. &#8220;Black Sun&#8221;, &#8220;Reader of the Ashes&#8221;, &#8220;The Long Coming of the Fire&#8221; &#8211; your poetry is deeply dramatic, even tragic. Granted that these motifs contain personal experience, this does not exhaust your world view. There is another element between you and the world. And that is?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>A.\u0160. Macedonian folklore and history, I would say.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>K.S. Now I have a question, especially for Svetlana. You are, as I understood, a professor of literature. Did folklore have a major influence on Macedonian literature?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>S.\u0160. Yes, indeed. The real development of our contemporary literature took place only after the war, in the 1950s, when the Macedonian nation crystallized. For the first generation of poets : Slavko Janevski, Gan Todorovski, Bla\u017ee Koneski, Aco \u0160opov, popular songs were the main source of inspiration in terms of both theme and style. The worldview and ethical ideals coincided with the anti-fascist resistance movement, the establishment of national power in Yugoslavia, the culture-building and the development of written Macedonian literature.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>K.S. Judging by the &#8220;Struga Poetry Evenings&#8221;, I would say that this culture-building succeeded very well! This festival is a renowned international poetic forum.
