{"id":103223,"date":"2024-06-28T16:09:01","date_gmt":"2024-06-28T14:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.acosopov.com\/reading-room\/poetry-shelf\/%d0%bd%d0%b0%d1%81%d1%82%d0%b0%d0%bd-%d0%bd%d0%b0-%d0%b5%d0%b7%d0%b5%d1%80%d1%81%d0%ba%d0%b8%d0%be%d1%82-%d0%b1%d1%80%d0%b5%d0%b3\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T12:07:39","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T11:07:39","slug":"an-event-by-the-lake","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.acosopov.com\/en\/reading-room\/poetry-shelf\/an-event-by-the-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"An Event by the Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1>\n\t\t\tAn Event by the Lake \t<\/h1>\n\tThe news spread like lightning<br \/>\nand all the people descended on the lakeshore,<br \/>\nwhere he lay exhausted and winded from his long journey-<br \/>\nthe winged horse with starlight in his eyes,<br \/>\nSiberian hoarfrost in his nostrils,<br \/>\nthe dust of the Saharan sand in his mane.<br \/>\nHe had circled the world, crossed all seas and oceans,<br \/>\nand barely found the strength to alight here, by his native lake,<br \/>\nthat he might drink its clear, cool, and health-giving water.<br \/>\nHe flew down and lay on the shore, winded from his long travels;<br \/>\nhe lay down next to the lake but lacked the strength to make<br \/>\none final effort-to plunge into the clear and health-giving water<br \/>\nthat would restore his strength to him,<br \/>\nthat would return his life to him.<br \/>\nThe people were gathered around him, jostling and murmuring,<br \/>\nthe women praying to God for mercy, the children gawking.<br \/>\nFor some of the men, this was inconceivable madness,<br \/>\nfor others, a journey in vain, a pointless flight,<br \/>\nbut for him, it was the highest purpose of his life:<br \/>\nto discover his native land by discovering the world.<br \/>\nThree days he lay by the water of the lake<br \/>\nwithout the strength to revive himself.<br \/>\nThree days he neither recovered nor died.<br \/>\nThree days the people waited with patience,<br \/>\nbut on the fourth day they slowly began to make their way home,<br \/>\nleaving the horse alone by the lake.<br \/>\nAnd just as the last person was getting ready to leave,<br \/>\nthe rain came down in torrents and the lake began to rise<br \/>\nand its waves began to lap against the horse beside the lake.<br \/>\nRevived by the clear and health-giving water,<br \/>\nthe horse neighed a few times, as much as his throat could manage,<br \/>\nand the startled people began to return;<br \/>\nthey could not take their eyes away as the horse plunged into the lake,<br \/>\nas he frolicked with the waves and drank the clear and health-giving water.<br \/>\nIt lasted just a few moments,<br \/>\nand then the horse came out onto the shore<br \/>\nand lifted himself again into the air, as if this were his very first flight,<br \/>\ncarrying with him his highest purpose:<br \/>\nto discover his native land and so discover the world.\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acosopov.com\/en\/display-case\/\">Aco \u0160opov<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acosopov.com\/en\/reading-room\/poetry-shelf\/the-song-of-the-black-woman-content\/\"><i>The Song of the Black Woman<\/i><\/a>, 1976<br \/>\nTranslated from the Macedonian by Christina E.
