Pound the shore.<br \/>\nRing out, bell of light and wind!<br \/>\nYou are rising, lake, but your bottomless howl<br \/>\ndwindles together with the crumbling sand.\nYou are here, but I&#8217;ll lose you pressed behind some hill;<br \/>\nalone, but like a shell you open within me,<br \/>\nand into my sight you fall as into a dry ravine<br \/>\nwith a kind of pang obscure and distant.\nThen I know, lake: again you&#8217;ll be gone a long time,<br \/>\nand for the millionth time again I will feel<br \/>\nthat you are fire, a secretly stolen flame<br \/>\nto burn someone&#8217;s heart, to burn someone&#8217;s blood.\nBut you rise with menace, with howling, with splendor,<br \/>\nand whatever might try in vain to escape you,<br \/>\nnothing will remain except shadow and sand-<br \/>\nthe sand on the shore that thirstily drinks you.\nAnd already that limitless drought I sense,<br \/>\nthat unspeaking realm overgrown with black crust,<br \/>\nwhich listens not to you but to thirsting springs<br \/>\nas if to the rolling of two heavy words.\nO lake, you are rising and with you the shore crumbles.<br \/>\nHide behind your beauty.
